An Amish Homecoming: Four Stories | Amy Clipston, Beth Wiseman , Shelley Shepard Gray & Kathleen Fuller

Este livro é composto por várias histórias de várias autoras "No Place Like Home" de Amy Clipston, "When Love Returns" de Beth Wiseman, "The Courage to Love" de Shelley Shepard Gray e "What Love Built" by Kathleen Fuller.

Adorei um aspeto deste livro que penso que nunca tinha lido em nenhum outro: no fim de cada história há um capítulo de reflexão onde são colocadas algumas questões para se discutir (talvez em grupo?). Achei isso muito interessante e fez-me pensar se não seriam "trabalhos de casa" da catequese.

Com trabalhos de casa destes a catequese até ia ser mais dinâmica e ensinar a refletir sobre determinados aspetos de forma menos maçadora.

É difícil escolher a minha história favorita, mas definitivamente gostei mais das primeiras duas:

"No Place Like Home" traz-nos a história de Eva, uma moça que vive com os seus sogros desde que o seu marido morreu num incêndio. No entanto, Eva retorna à terra natal para que o seu filho tenha a oportunidade de conhecer os pais dela e depara-se com o homem que era suposto casar com ela (por vontade dos pais) a viver lá na quinta deles a troco de nenhum salário. Enquanto Eva desconfia das intenções de Ian e tenta descobrir o que o mantém na quinta, Eva perdoa-se a si e aos pais e acaba por reacender uma paixão antiga. 

"When Love Returns" traz-nos a história de Sarah que fugiu de casa há 6 anos com uma gravidez indesejada. Agora, devido ao Furacão Harvey, vê-se obrigada a pedir ajuda e a voltar para casa dos pais com uma filha que eles nunca conheceram. No meio disso tudo há Abram, seu ex-namorado que não sabe porque Sarah fugiu naquela altura. 

Ambas me lembram a história do filho pródigo e são sobre o perdão que devemos a nós mesmos e aos que nos são queridos e, por vezes, nos magoam. Além disso, fazem-nos pensar sobre a gratidão, que devemos ser gratos pelo que temos, pelo que perdemos e pelo que podemos fazer para construir um futuro melhor.

De uma forma geral este livro fala sobre novas oportunidades e da capacidade de exercer o perdão.

Uma leitura ideal para o Thanksgiving! :)

I loved an aspect of this book that I think I had never read in any other: at the end of each story there is a reflection chapter where are asked some questions perhaps to be discuss in group? I found this very interesting and it made me wonder if it was "homework" for sunday school.

With homework like this, sunday school would even be more dynamic and teach people to reflect on certain things without being boring.

It's hard to choose my favorite story because I loved them all, but the first and second were the ones I definitely enjoyed the most:

"No Place Like Home" brings us the story of Eva, a girl who has lived with her in-laws since her husband died in a fire. However, Eva returns to her homeland so that her son has the opportunity to meet her parents and runs into the man who was supposed to marry her (by his parents' wishes) living there on their farm for no reason. wage. While Eva is suspicious of Ian's intentions and tries to find out what keeps him on the farm, Eva forgives herself and her parents and ends up rekindling an old passion.

"When Love Returns" brings us the story of Sarah who ran away from home 6 years ago with an unwanted pregnancy. Now, due to Hurricane Harvey, she is forced to ask for help and return to her parents' home with a daughter they never knew. In the middle of it all is Abram, her boyfriend at the time who doesn't know why Sarah ran away at the time.

Both remind me of the story of the prodigal son and are about the forgiveness we owe ourselves and those we love and sometimes hurt. They also make us think about gratitude and that we should be grateful for what we have, for what we have lost and for what we can do to build a better future.

Overall this book is about new opportunities, about always being on time to forgive and being forgiven by those we hurt the most and ourselves (who are sometimes the ones we inflict the most pain on).

This book is a perfect read for this Thanksgiving! :)

4ª Edição do Desafio New Year With Books

Mais um ano, mais um…    New Year with Books!🎇🥳 

Já vamos na 4ª Edição deste desafio e queria agradecer do fundo do meu coração a todos os que têm acompanhado e participado nele desde que ele foi criado.

Relativamente à última edição, as categorias são mais ou menos as mesmas. Mantive a categoria da vencedora da 2ª Edição (a categoria 7 criada pela @booksbynadia) e este ano temos uma nova categoria 6 criada pela vencedora da 3ª edição do New Year With Books: @martaambr0si0.

Como sempre, o objetivo do desafio é lerem o máximo de livros que têm parados nas estantes e divertirem-se muito!

O desafio irá decorrer de 1 de dezembro de 2021 a 31 de janeiro de 2022.

À semelhança do ano passado haverá um prémio, mas fiquem muito atentos às regras para participação no sorteio.

1. Ano velho: o livro mais antigo de 2021 (que compraste e não leste) ou um dos mais antigos da tua TBR

2. Festas: um livro que se passe no natal ou nas festividades do ano novo

3. Família e amigos: um livro cujo tema principal seja a família/amizade

7. Prendas: um livro oferecido ou indicado por uma pessoa que te é querida (self gifts incluídos - categoria criada pela @booksbynadia - vencedora da 2ª Edição)

8. Vida "l0ka": Lê o que te apetecer

Desafio extra: Bacalhau ou peru - partilha uma tradição de natal tua/da tua família

Regras:

1. São permitidos todos os formatos de livro (livro "longo", contos, BD/manga, ebook, audiobook).

2. Cada livro lido só conta para uma categoria e não há várias rondas, só podes fazer o desafio uma vez.

3. Podes contabilizar um máximo de 2 livros para a categoria 8.

4. Cada livro lido vale 10 pontos, exceto o da categoria 2 que vale 20.

5. Para te habilitares a uma entrada no sorteio tens que obter 20 pontos e a cada 20 pontos acumulados recebes uma entrada extra. Contudo, tens que ler, no mínimo, livros para duas categorias diferentes para que os teus pontos comecem a contar.

6. Também para ganhares a entrada extra com o "Desafio Extra" precisas de um mínimo de 20 pontos ganhos.

Apesar de o desafio ter como objetivo ler o máximo de livros parado nas estantes, algumas das novas regras vêm tentar resolver algumas disparidades de participações que tenho observado nas últimas edições.

O objetivo do New Year With Books é divertirmos-nos e desafiarmos-nos, mas não é uma competição a ver quem lê 30 livros num mês. Ainda bem que há gente que lê isso tudo, contudo, não quero criar um fosso que possa desmotivar alguém que até consegue ler 2 livros, mas por não ter o mesmo ritmo de leitura ou não ler tanto assim acha que não vale a pena participar porque não consegue competir com alguém que lê 30 livros ao mês e ganharia muitas mais entradas.

Vocês podem sempre ler aquilo que quiserem, não me interpretem mal, mas, efetivamente, para o sorteio só contarão 9 livros lidos para as respetivas categorias.

Posto isto, convido-vos a terminarem este fim de 2021 e começo de 2022 em grande e a utilizarem a hashtag #newyearwithbookschallenge nas vossas publicações para que eu possa ir vendo o que vocês andam a ler.

O livro The Wolf and the Water é um young adult histórico que nos traz a história de Kepos (Atlantis) sob o olhar de Kala, filha de um líder de uma tribo recentemente falecido, que possui uma deficiência física que a torna alvo de desprezo pela comunidade.

Depois da estranha morte do pai, Kala teme pela sua segurança e pelo seu futuro, principalmente, tendo em conta que a mãe terá que voltar a casar para dar um herdeiro à tribo.

Quando a mãe escolhe o seu pretendente, nós, leitores, tememos por Kala, porque o padrasto é um homem abusivo, vil e muito violento. No entanto, tem um filho, Leon, que acaba por ser um anjo para guarda de Kala.

The Wolf and The Water é uma história de segredos, misoginia, escravatura, preconceito, coragem, superação e força.

Para quem segue o que publico, já reparou que não é a primeira vez que trago para este espaço um livro desta autora. Estou habituada a ler as suas histórias de vampiros, por isso quando vi The Wolf And The Water, um livro baseado na lenda da Atlântida, fiquei muito curiosa por ser completamente diferente do tipo de histórias que a Josie nos apresenta.

Fiquei muito surpreendida com esta história! Adorei toda a construção do cenário sob o qual a história se desenvolve, adorei o contexto político do livro e que os capítulos tivessem o nome/descrição das tribos enquadrando-nos nesse contexto.

Gostei, acima de tudo, de The Wolf and The Water por ter sido imprevisível. Não consegui adivinhar muitos dos acontecimentos e gostei da forma como as personagens evoluíram e criaram vínculos de amizade e amor entre si.

O único aspeto que posso considerar negativo é que não senti aquele build-up até ao clímax do livro. Sabíamos o que se avizinhava, mas senti que faltou uma revelação bombástica que me deitasse ao chão.

O final fez-me ficar super curiosa para o próximo livro. Que novas aventuras no mundo dos Deluge a Josie Jaffrey nos trará? Mal posso esperar por saber como continuará a série.

The Wolf and the Water is a historical young adult that brings us the story of Kepos (Atlantis) through the eyes of Kala, the daughter of a recently deceased tribe leader, who has a physical disability that makes her the target of disdain by the community.

After her father's strange death, Kala fears for her safety and her future, especially given that her mother will have to remarry to give the tribe a male heir.

When the mother chooses her suitor, we readers fear for Kala, because her stepfather is an abusive, vile and very violent man. However, he has a son, Leon, who ends up becoming Kala's guardian angel.

The Wolf and The Water is a story of secrets, misogyny, slavery, prejudice, courage, resilience and strength.

For those who follow what I publish here, you have already noticed that this is not the first time that I bring a book by Josie Jaffrey to this space. I'm used to her vampire stories, so when I saw The Wolf And The Water, a book based on the legend of Atlantis, I was very curious because it was completely different from the stories that Josie introduced us to.

I was very surprised by this story! I loved the entire construction of the setting under which the story unfolds. I loved all of the political aspects of the book and that the chapters had the name and description of the tribes.

Above all I liked The Wolf and The Water because it was unpredictable. I couldn't guess many of the events and I loved the way the characters evolved and created bonds of friendship and love with each other.

The only thing I can consider negative is that I didn't feel that build-up until the climax of the story. We knew what lay ahead, but I felt that there was a lack of a spark, some revelation that would put me to the ground.

The ending made me super curious for the next book. What new adventures in the world of Deluge will Josie Jaffrey bring us? I can't wait to see how the series will continue!
