Winta's Day (Seekers #3) | Josie Jaffrey

Synopsis: Vampires are hardwired to kill. Is it any wonder that some become experts?

Jack Valentine is in trouble. The Seekers are living on borrowed time, her ex-girlfriend has gone missing in suspicious circumstances, and someone's sent her a seriously twisted love letter attached to a hanged man. It’s not that she doesn’t appreciate the sentiment, and sure, the guy deserved everything he got, but even Jack knows that expressions of affection don't usually involve murder.

It’s not the first time Jack’s questionable romantic choices have caused problems. Her latest disaster ended with her nemesis, Drake, buggering off to Europe on an extended sexcation, leaving her to face the consequences of the worst walk-of-shame of her life alone. Dealing with that was bad enough, but now her fellow Seekers are poking their noses into Jack’s love life in a case that threatens to be their last.

Jack has two options: toe the line or go rogue. And with her team falling apart around her, rebellion's starting to sound pretty sweet.

Winta's Day  is the third book in Josie Jaffrey’s Seekers series, an urban fantasy series set in Oxford, England.

Winta’s Day is an urban fantasy set in Oxford and the third book in the Seekers series (May Day opinion HERE; Judgment Day opinion HERE). Jack Valentine is a member of the Seekers, a kind of police force for the Silvers (vampires), responsible for keeping their existence a secret from humans.

As if keeping the vampires' existence a secret wasn’t already complicated enough, Jack finds herself in trouble when she’s left a love note pinned to a man who disintegrates right in front of her.

After the events of the previous book (Judgment Day), Jack is disappointed with everything and everyone: her (now) ex-girlfriend Tabitha betrayed her by working undercover for the Solis Invicti (a sort of “royal guard” to the Primus, the ruling Silver) and is now missing, her best friend Cam seems intent on joining them and her Seekers squad has seen better days. And as if that wasn’t enough to deal with… Winta returns.

Winta is the one who turned Jack into a vampire and then disappeared. Since then, despite searching for her, Jack never found her again, and Winta became that lingering “what if” love. So her return, at such a vulnerable moment, affects Jack even more deeply.

Winta first appears in the prequel Killian’s Dead. I’ll be honest: I never liked her and this book only reinforced that. Their relationship continues to feel toxic and frustrating. Jack loses her essence around her, and every interaction between them just annoyed me.

In contrast, I absolutely loved (as always) Jack’s friendship with Cam (the perfect friend 🫶 and when he messes up, we forgive him) and… of course, my ship: Jack and Drake (🥰🥵).

Apart from the policial investigation in this book, Winta’s Day is ultimately a story about the different relationships in Jack’s life: past, present, and future. It brings unexpected revelations, difficult and dangerous choices and promises of eternal love.

I’d like to thank the author for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review (even though I ended up reading a physical copy - because I love these books so much that I always end up buying them to have them all looking pretty on my shelf 😀).

Rating: ★★★ (5/5)
